Weekly #Photography Fix: Goodbye to a Friend and New Photos
This past Friday, Val and I attended the funeral for our friend Isiah Nixon. It was one of the saddest events of my life. Isiah was 22 years old and left behind a beautiful young wife and a wonderful baby boy. But in his short time here, Isiah made a tremendous impact on many people, including Val and me. Throughout the funeral service, people kept talking about Isiah’s passion for life – everything he did, he did with all his heart.
Hearing people talk about that on Friday sparked something inside me. Photography is my passion. Sure, there are other things I enjoy, but nothing as much as being behind the lens. Yet, with the other demands on my time recently – a busy job and a new baby daughter – I have not been cultivating my passion like I should. So after saying goodbye to my friend, I decided that I can no longer make any excuses for not making time to pursue my photography.
This morning I dragged myself out of bed at 6:30, and my friend Ron and I went to Oakwood Cemetery to shoot some photos. It felt really good to get out and snap some photos of something besides Callie and my pets (not that I don’t absolutely love photographing them…I just haven’t done anything different since before December). I have always enjoyed photographing cemeteries, but maybe I was a little more drawn to Oakwood this morning with Isiah’s passing still weighing heavy on my heart. Regardless, today I feel like I got some great shots. Click here to see some of those photos in the Oakwood Cemetery gallery on my website.
We will miss you, Isiah…

Weekly #Photography Fix: Gavin
This is perhaps one of my all-time favorite photos that I have shot. Last weekend I visited my good friend Ron while he was home with two of his kids. He, his wife Erica, and their three kids are some of the best people you will ever meet. This is Gavin, their youngest, as he was hanging from the swingset and telling me about the prettiest girl…Emily in South Carolina.
Weekly #Photography Fix – Daisy
I know I just posted this photo on the Barks and Bottles blog, but I like it so much I’m posting it here too…
Weekly #Photography Fix: Nursery Images
As some of you know, I have recently launched a new venture named Barks and Bottles. It is a photography service specializing in child and pet photography. You can find out more about how and why I got into it by visiting the info page, or you can visit the website. In any case, the holidays are coming up and photos make great gifts. I always appreciate referrals, so please pass my website along to anyone you know who might be interested. Thanks!
And for this week’s Photography Fix…
With the imminent arrival of our little one, Val has worked very hard to get the nursery ready. Last weekend I shot a few images, and these were two of my favorites.
Weekly #Photography Fix: Rainbow over Blue Ridge Parkway
Yes – I have been slack about posting lately. MAJORLY slack! Here’s an image from our trip to the mountains of Western NC this past weekend. I’ll be better about posting…promise.
We were driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway and experienced the thickest fog I had ever seen. As we were going back down one of the mountains, the fog started to clear and I spotted this rainbow. It was still raining a little bit, so there were water spots on the lens, but the mountain just looked amazing with the rainbow shooting out of it.
